What is Rural
Transport

Rural Transport comprises
the transport activities which take place at local government, community and household
levels. It includes:
1. rural transport services
for passengers.
2. freight services by motorized and non-motorized means.
3. rural transport infrastructure (roads, tracks, trails, paths, foot bridges etc.)
The length of the classified
Rural Road Network is about three time the length of the main and
provincial network (see statistic). However, they carry only
10% of the road traffic in vehicle-kilometer. These roads are in bad condition and poorly
maintained.
Additionally there exist a
vast network of community tracks, trails, paths and foot bridges of unknown length.
Responsibility for this infrastructure lies by default with local population.
Rural Transport
Services are mainly provided by private sector. These services are inadequate.
Bicycles, animal carts are main means of transport in rural areas. Women and children
often bear the brunt of the transport load in terms of time and tonnage. |
