Rapid Growth of Urban Areas Very Rapid Increase in Motorization
Over past twenty years we have witnessed an amazing expansion of cities like Karachi, Lahore, Faislabad, Sialkot, Gujrawala, Islababad etc. This expansion rate is as high as 6% annually. Urban motor vehicle ownership and usage is growing even faster than urban population. According to data collected this is increase was 7% in 1991. And it is assumed that it have increased to 10%.
Substantial Increase in Traffic Congestion Decline of Public Transport Usage and Services
Ownership and usage of vehicle is growing much faster than the ability to provide enough road space. Sever traffic congestion's, an its adserve side effects on urban economy, environment and society are being felt in many cities. AS an average distance of 15km takes about 45min to cover due to traffic congestion's. The growing reliance on private vehicles has resulted in a substantial decline in the share of total trips being provided by the urban public transport system. Punjab government has already demolished Public Urban Road Transport Corporation. The whole urban public transport system is ran by private sector.
Shift from Public to Private Sector of Services Ignorance of General Public
It is estimated that at least 80% of all the urban bus services provided are owned by private sector. However, in the absence of proper legislation and poor implementation this changes is causing problem to urban poor who are dependent to public transit for access to employment. Public officials and the general public are not much aware of the adverse impacts or side effects of modern urban transport systems. A nation wide campaign to educate general public in this regard is needed. ARUP is such an organization working to create better roads in Pakistan.
