transport services and facilities to the private sector, is the increased increased

| Over past
twenty years we have witnessed an amazing expansion of cities like Karachi, Lahore,
Faislabad, Sialkot, Gujrawala, Islababad etc. This expansion rate is as high as 6%
annually. |
Urban motor
vehicle ownership and usage is growing even faster than urban population. According to
data collected this is increase was 7% in 1991. And it is assumed that it have increased
to 10%. |

and usage of vehicle is growing much faster than the ability to provide enough road space.
Sever traffic congestion's, an its adserve side effects on urban economy, environment and
society are being felt in many cities. AS an average distance of 15km takes about 45min to
cover due to traffic congestion's. |
The growing
reliance on private vehicles has resulted in a substantial decline in the share of total
trips being provided by the urban public transport system. Punjab government has already
demolished Public Urban Road Transport Corporation. The whole urban public transport
system is ran by private sector. |

Ignorance
of General Public |
| It is
estimated that at least 80% of all the urban bus services provided are owned by private
sector. However, in the absence of proper legislation and poor implementation this changes
is causing problem to urban poor who are dependent to public transit for access to
employment. |
Public
officials and the general public are not much aware of the adverse impacts or side effects
of modern urban transport systems. A nation wide campaign to educate general public in
this regard is needed. ARUP
