Port & Shipping in Pakistan

More than 8- percent of trade with origins or destinations in developing countries, including Pakistan, in tonnage, is waterborne.  Total world port traffic reached 4.9 billion tons in 1997. This is about 3 percent growth rate since 1990's 4 billion total. Hence waterborne transport is the main medium of international trade.

Pakistan has two ports, they collectively handled 25.599 million tonnage in the fiscal year 1998-99.  This trend is obvious from the graph below:

General Trends in Freight Traffic

Karachi Port:
Karachi Port is the main port of the country, handling the majority of all dry and liquid cargo. Karachi port has handled 17.586 million tones of cargo during July-March 1998-99. (13.302 million tones of imports and 4.284 million tones of exports)

Port Qasim
Pakistan second deep sea port is 50 kilometer southeast from Karachi. It was built in 1980 for overflow from Karachi Port. During the period July-March 1998-99 a cargo volume of 8.013 million tones, comprising 7.529 million tones of import and 0.484 million tones of exports was handled at the port.

Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC)

The Corporation is the national flag carrier and its main objectives are:

1. to serve an operating link between major trading partners of the country.
2. to maintain a stabilizing influence on the freight rates charged by the Conferences and other liner services.
3. save Foreign Exchange.
4. provide strategic link in case of emergencies.
