Transport plays an important part
in the growth and well being of a country. It currently contributes
slightly more than 10% to Pakistan's GDP - trade and transport
together contribute 25.6%, which is slightly higher then the
contribution of the agriculture sector (24.5%). The infrastructure
covering Pakistan's transport sector is, unfortunately, inadequate
and outdated. The poor conditions prevailing at the present time
have placed a severe restraint on the economic growth of the
country. It is therefore, extremely important to address the issues
that are adversely hampering this sector and to make every effort to
correct them.

The government, the
private sector and the civil society of Pakistan are in the
process of developing the first integrated transport policy
and its implementation strategy. This initiative, not only
complements the broader sustainable growth and poverty
alleviation initiative for Pakistan but also strengthen the
public sector partnership with private sector and civil
society to usher in a new are of
development. |
